I hung out there quite a bit in '90 and '91 but as I had just moved from the east coast I still had my conservative shyness going. I did a couple of open mic nights with my friend Stig but other than that I would usually just hang with the people I showed up with.

                Matt here
I Was around from '89 on. Rode a bicycle all the time, and read heinlein novels. I did hear from Dave sorenson aka hippy dave. He lives over in the methow valley. Married with a child.
Im over in spokane, with wife and kids. Im back in school, going first for my bachelors in chemistry, and I have plans to get my masters in education. Im also in the midst of getting ready for this years Librafest.
I don't get over to Seattle often. maybe three times a year. My next possible trip will be in November.
I wish there was a coffeehouse here in spokane open past 10pm that wasnt a starbucks. Well, now that Im back in school, its not as if Id have time to go there anyway. sour grapes anyone?

I hung around with Rick Ustleton, Ann, Alan and a host of other ne'er do wells from Lander Hall. They were the hippie crowd and aclled me their token yuppie. Alan could be seen most days in a pirate shirt and a pair of clogs he bought on a jaunt down in the pioneer square clog shop. Ann was a perpetual hiking boot girl, and rick was always in a ratty coat and wing tip shoes with holes in the soles.

Me, I wore the tie. And was always reading something by an economist Schumpeter, Gilpin, Hegel, Marx etc...

Yeah, I remember all of you...
Stiggs, Ken/Elf, John and Ruth, Alpha, Handlebar (heh hee), Zarth, Zen, Mike Moody, Steve, Auggie (the old german guy who passed in 91 or so), Bradly, Tripper John and Sarah, the Vivster, Denny Davis, Josh Be Gosh, "Boots", Jessica Dumas (her 20yrs might be coming up), Liz ... forgotten so many, mainly because I knew everyone there. And there are too many to remember from so long ago.

Just the other day I was thinking about Shadow (David) and his fall from the tower at Gas Works... must have been back in '90 or something.
Last I saw him was in 98, just a bit before I split that city for SF.
Made me sad to remember what happened to that guy.

And what happened to the Zit was a f*ng shame, but without Irv to hold it together, there was no way such a good thing could last.

Irv I have to say was a real great guy who sat and chatted with me a few times during my years there. Quite sincere and quite ready to help where he could. Very few around that could match his personal stature.

Anyway, never seen this tribe site before, I'm not much into online blog things, but a google search of the exit gave this blog numer uno.

I wont leave a name, but you might place me from my pic...
or maybe not, it was all so very long ago.

OMG zarth.I ahd forgotten him. Which steve? Auggie was Norwegian, and I bet he'd of been upset to be called german, Ha!

What about Cornflake? And Matt the guy who hang out with Auggie(sp?), and Rose, and valentina, and Tom the barista, And Mark the disher who also had a degree in math. And Brent S, and was their a guy named rain? rainbow? I cant remember.

For that matter I mostly remember you, but I cant quite place you. sigh. I can remember a bunch more faces but almost no names.
      • Re: Roll Call...88-93...

        Fri, November 4, 2005 - 4:27 PM
Steve was the 40 something guy with the short strawberry blonde hair and perpetual beret who would usually be at Auggies table... and damn, Augie was Norwegian. And reading some other posts, I think his name was spelled Agge. Me and him used to chat quite a bit in the evenings, right until he passed.

Cornflake... last I saw her was in the early to mid 90's.
Valentina, I haven't seen since the exit.
And yeah, Rainbow, he was a busser I think.
Haven't seen him since the exit either.

Funny being reminded of people I haven't seen in years, like Skunk, Butterfly, Karma... and remembering others like Nills and Jeremy WHOREton :)

I must have met at least 100 people there -- probably more... hard to keep track of them all.

Cornflake is now back to her real name; not sure how she spells it, probably Cari? She is doing some amazing trapeze work, mostly a dual act with her girlfriend, not sure what else she's up to, wonderful and gorgeous as always when last I saw her, probably a little over a year ago.

Valentina I last saw maybe 2 years ago, same old same old, apparently doing fine.

I see Butterfly and Karma around town, mostly at arts events, him a little more often than her. They seem to be doing pretty well, but I can't say we've really talked.

Well if anyone cares I'm still in touch with the Vale, Bones, Jay Kieselburg, Skunk (goes by Alex now) and a few others.

All are doing reasonably well. If any of ya'all want to pass along messages or contact info let me know.

I used to be married to Skunk, goes by his middle name Alex now. We have a daughter, she'e 8. I wonder what happened to Cage and Sundance or Alpha. Moose and Louie. All those fascinating people. The Zit was the ultimate living room. R.I.P.

Cage works at Whole Foods in the Roosevelt District, as does Shanonne, Marisande's daughter. Moose I last saw at Shawn Donovan's funeral, but he seemed to be doing OK then. Louie I haven't seen in a bit, either, I know he had a pretty nasty motorcycle accident, but I think he recovered OK. He's living out in Monroe, unless I'm mistaken.

I last saw Alpha a few years ago. He'd blown in from Denver for a couple of days.

As far as I know he hasn't been heard from by anyone since.

Louie is still around and can still be found at the Solstice in the UD most Fridays around 5 PM.

Jess can bite me. She'd better still be locked up. Speaking of locked up, John is N/A, but I saw Ruth a couple of years ago and she looked great. Years younger and happier than she did back in the day.

Thankfully I've mostly forgiven or forgotten anyone who I crossed irons with back in the day.

There's only really two people from the Exit on my shit list and both for things that happened long after both the Exit closed.

There are many hatchets that I consider to be thoroughly buried - but Jess is/was in prison for strangling to death Lisa's cousin (and my friend) Corey. That's not one i'm gonna get over.

Yea ... that definately qualifies as the sort of thing worth holding a grudge over.

I really didn't know the story surrounding this. But I find there were quite a few things that happened during my time at the Exit I had no idea about at the time.

I kind of remember Purple Sean, No I don't think that I slept with you...I was at the Exit from 92 and on. I remember Red, Anna, Little Dave, Randall, My Holy Names Crew, Irv, Steven, That really cute barista guy with the long black hair in the ponytail..., Two thanksgiving in a row at the exit, Dan giving us rides to school after pastries and coffee in the morning, Julian, Rice, Jingles, Ken--(I'm sorry), Che--, Liz, Stiggs, THE UNDERGROUND--so old school, My love Chuck, barter fairs and Rainbow gatherings. What ever happened to school bus Dana, Rick and Montana--The list goes on.

cute barista guy's name was Mark, wasn't it? I remember him. And I wondered about Dana, too. And what's up with Chuck? Not Lisa's Chuck, but the one who had Cody the dog? And Carlene? And Cub? I've seen Cub a few years ago. He was going by "Dave". Gee, there are way too many people to list here. But I do think about them. And it's been 10 years since I moved out of the Hippie House.

I think we all still think about them because that was the hub that everyone came to. And many awesome stories to be told like the time I found george and mikey cuddled up taking a nap in mike's room at the hippie frat. Or listening to louie curse at the red paint he had just put on the floor starting to peel. But what I really miss is the patio at the Zit on Brooklyn. And A great chess game.

Chuck is living out near Goldbar. He seems to have a pretty good thing going fixing Subarus from car auctions and selling them. Cub, last i saw, was doing quite well and had gotten very into middle-eastern music. was playing with a band. Dana, if rumor is to be believed, will probably not be seen again. Something about killing a Mounty with a snowmobile trying to get past the Canadian border. This story could just be a "Spizz got run over by a bus in SF" thing though.

Hiya peoples. I see here many familiar faces, good to see some are still staying in contact and passing on the stories. Though I often lament the scattering of the community that made up the original XIT, I recognize that it was about all of us, our diversity, and our synergy. I consider myself fortunate to have had the experience of its magnitude.
"Time is an enourmous long river of important events and important ideas and I am standing in it just as you are standing in it. Our elders were the tributaries. Everything they thought and every struggle they went through and every song they created and every poem that they laid down flows down to us. If we take the time to ask, if we take the time to see, if we take the time to reach out we can build a bridge between our time theirs and we can reach down to take from that river what we need to get through this world. Bridges from my time to your time and my elders from their time to my time all put into that river and we let it go and it flows away from us and away from us until it no longer carries our names or our identities. It has its own utility its own use. People take what they need to make a part of their lives." ~observations of Utah Philips

Oh, btw, I am almost certain that Lou is not living in Monroe... unless he moved in with Noah.

Wow, reality check. I was starting to believe that my memories of all these names and places was just a drug-addled dream. Apparently not so. I see a lot of references I recognize here. I was in the Exit/YellowHouse scene from around 90-93 before sorta dropping out to do my own thing. The only one I'm still in fairly regular contact with is Skater Chuck, tho it's not been too long since I've heard from Jacques, Tygar, Joanie, Ben & Jingles (married after years apart), Paris, Stephen and some others. I knew about some of the deaths (Long live Toad!) but what happend to Che?? Would love to know what ever became of Bradley, John & Ruth John (still locked up?), Idiot Rick, Gem, Lisa, Chip Sandifer, and so many others as memory unfolds.

i suppose i should speak... quiet dave here the one lurking in the background. dated April at the time and was at the old exit from 91ish to 92ish on occasion with Mikey and jay, fire eater John, Erik the tall nordic god, Big Jim, eamon, june and Sandra and Nancy and all the usual suspects of the hippie house.... sadly when i later attended UW I even used a box much like this they call a Comp[..uter in the old exit and it felt wrong and haunted and i don't want to go back cause the sign in desk is where the creepy rickety stairs were to the infamous back deck where i spent many hours watching my friends smoke as i reveled in my iced latte. i was happy i wasn't at work so i rarely spoke and when i did it was a pun joke or something in that vain. no i never went to the second exit....didn't look the same or wait i did once. I drove a 1976 Blue chevy Luv and a 1967 Cadillac Coupe DeVille and played drums

The space that used to be the Exit is definately haunted. I haven't been inside but the back deck has ghosts enough.

Agreed. A while back I went and poked around the back deck, peeking in the windows and such. Truly a strange vibe back there. Can practically still smell the smoke and patchouli and hear the laughter etc. It reminded me of the "ghosts" that used to be imprinted in the wood paneling along the walls at the ends of the benches where you could see where people had been leaning up against the walls for so many years.

More than one person known as Doc, there might be confusion here. I assume this is NOT Doc who was born about 1955 and used to be married to Sigrid Black? I last saw HIM about 5 years ago and he seemed to be doing fine.

I was a slip of a thing in high school back then - but you all knew me! I used to use the nickname "Gyrfalcon" :)

Silly thing, I was on and off attached to Shadow for years...

I'm in Minnesota now, where I was born! Think of everyone there often! I'll just scare you all if you go read my profile *LAUGH* time has certainly passed!!

ps and as soon as the "technical issues" are dealt with there'll be some pictures!

Hi Gyrfalcon or Marie if you now prefer.

Danny here. Still in Seattle and the Grand Coulee Dam area. Hell of a commute.

      Notes:

Valentina married her Finnish sweetie after all these years. If people think it is difficult for a foreigner to marry an American, they have never known anyone who tried to marry a Finn. She is living in Finland and had a baby this last year.

Moose is still around, seen occasionally.

There is a gathering of the last remnants Friday afternoons at the Cafe Racer on Roosevelt. The motorcycle contingent is heavily represented. Louie is there almost every week.

Note for Marie, Kathryn and Eric are still together in Bellingham. They made it official over a decade ago.

        Hi Danny!

That's excellent for Valentina... haven't thought about her in years - wonderful lady! I know the issues... I imported my husband from England. *Shudders at the reams of paperwork* horrible then (almost 10 years) and worse now I understand. Can you believe my son is the exact age I was when I first met you? 15 1/2... yeah... I'm still in a bit of shock.

Hope you are well... how about the rest of any of my peers? I know a few are still around... and yeah, I know about Shadow. One thing most folks don't know is that *I* was the one who actually got the first call. He'd occasionally track me down so my number was the one in his wallet.

Things are wonderful here. We have a light layer of snow and it's VERY cold. I love it :) My folks retired to rural France and are learning the language and enjoying it there so much! Needless to say, we travel A LOT!

So what did ever become of Shadow? I know about the fall at Gasworks, but it sounds like there was something subsequent?

He passed away about 7-8 years ago on the sailboat he was living on. Hypothermia and complications.

All I can say is at least he was at peace and dreaming...

Hello everybody! So many memories of the Last Exit On Brooklyn, and the people I knew there. First time at the Last Exit was in 1983 ( I think?). Started drifting away around 1990. Moved to Capitol Hill, then Madrona, then to Tempe, AZ. Visited the 'xit during my trips back to Seattle. One day, blissfully ignorant, I walked down the Ave, through the alley, and down the path to the back patio. *gasp* It had MOVED?????

It just wasn't the same after that. I miss the Last Exit very much.
