Who Do You Remember???

Okay, Exiteers, fess up: List as many names as you can remember from the good ol' days at the Center of the Universe, and i'm sure we'll find some crossover. And introduce yourself. This will be a bit redundant from the Vaguely Recognize discussion, but what the hell. If anyone knows where these people are, invite them to the posible summer Gassworks reunion BBQ mentioned in the Reunion discussion. This isn't who you hung out with necessarily, just who you remember. But it will be telling! Okay, here's my contribution:

Howie Cohen, his friend Kate, Yannos Matthesien, (sp) and his bro Lav, (their Mom is Maeve), Jenny Schleeps (sp), Noah Ackerman (poor guy, that bike wreck really changed him) Liz Evans (went to culinary school) Neil Crummit, and his sister Tracy (their mom hung herself after failing as a writer), Denise Adlum, Kye (both had kids), the Hatch brothers, Heather Hobson (redhead, 11-day party), Cory Potts (I dated briefly), Eve Higgins (the old woman tarot reader who was truly psychic), Eddie Walker, Pilgrim, Ralph Ralph and other obvious mainstays, John Dowd (PBJ king, appeared in a photo with Ram Das and Timothy Leary), "Seagul" (who went to jail for a while i think), Damon Gayden, Curtis Murray, aka Leggo T Schmeg (selling crack on capitol hill last i heard), Mishka (Sean says he was touring with Edie Brickell!) And Amani of course. (Hi!) There are many others who's names escape me right now, sorry.

Now. Who Remembers Kathy Leavy? Lived in a loft next to the Smith Tower, and died there from a heroin OD. It was a week before they kicked in her door. Played Cello. I was at her funeral service. The minister implied that she hadn't repented for her sins. Her conservative christian parents blamed all us heathen druggies for her death. Personally, i had no idea she was even using. Anybody else remember this?

I sometimes went by the unfortunate moniker of "Fluff". I was there about '86 until the move. Lived in the Bat Cave, across the street from Safeway on 50th and Roosevelt, until it burned to the ground. Worked as a dishwasher for a while, had my share of crazy learning experiences, but mostly good fun. I Got a job in AK, then went to Evergreen for 5 yrs. Now in Eugene, OR at U.O. for grad school in architecture. Returning to Puget Sound soon.

Your turn...

last exit menu

Hi to all Last Exiters --

Wow. I had not idea this tribe existed and I'm damn happy to find it. I discovered the last exit when I was 16/17 as a high school student just learning to play chess. I was a fixture in that place, playing chess with the occasional break to play video games (donkey kong) and have a 25 cent hot dog and coke at Arnold's. At the exit I remember a lawyer named Mike, a great kid named Darwin, a taxi driver named Sid, a lovely student from Lakeside named Kate, a sand bagging middle aged chess playing woman also I think named Kate, in addition to some great chess players like Ken Tompkins. It was Awesome! I played 'til midnight on the weekends.

Looking back, over the years, I think fondly of the food and drink. I drank constant comet tea in those old beat up jugs, and steamed milk with honey and nutmeg. I ate bagels with cream cheese, toasted cheese sandwhiches with sprouts, and a delicious vegetarian sandwhich, but I can't remember what all was on it. I think it had cucumbers, lettuce, tomato, cheese....but I just can't remember. Does anyone remember what was on the sandwhich? I'd be eternally grateful because I want to recreate it again as a homage to a place that was incredible and holds a special, irreplaceable, place in my heart. Thanks.

Mike

Hi everyone. It seems like Tribe is used by fewer people than it used to be (I'm afraid I hardly come around any more, although this group seems to do just fine moderating itself!), and so I thought I'd share the info that there is a Facebook group for the Last Exit, too. I think that this link should work:

Heya...I am trying to relocate to Portland from Spokane ASAP, & I was wondering if any of you cats who might be in that area might be able to point me in the direction of a cheap, safe, mellow place to park my van & plug into some electricity, possibly have access to laundry & shower facilities, I would be MOST appreciative...I have a clean, very low key chevy mark 3 camper conversion, standard length & height...& a garage would be even better, but not necessary...but,yeah, if anyone could provide me with any leads, please hit me up privately...THANKS!!!

Like many of the postings, I remember some people and not others, however, I think an online photo album for this site would be great if people might consider contributing pictures of themselves with their nicknames and/or given names from this period of our collective history.

Let me know what you think, and if people like the idea, perhaps someone could volunteer to coordinate as I am not terribly computer savvy.

Howdy y'all...I've been checking in on this site but didn't know how to post stuff, join the tribe and communicate. I've been hanging out in Buzios, Brazil halftime, for the last five years. Been learning Portuguese, partying in Salvador, found a great gallery to handle my work and hope to move there, Salvador, in 2008. Folks can find me at my website...quantumimages.org, or email at afroartist@hotmail.com, or call at 425-646-4486. I'm crashing in Bellevue with tons of the works I created at the Exit. I'll post images and stuff on this site now that I know how.
Anyone who wants to purchase works or commission works...zap me a message...discounts for old Exiteers. Keep the tribe alive...Irv lives in us all.

about 5 people on here. Only two people who I had connections with (Paris, Amani). I hang out with Buckwheat all the time these days, he's doin' pretty good. He's the one who showed me this place, actually.

Somebody asked about Rick. The short, psychotic "chemist"? I heard he died about ten or so years ago.

See Tygar occasionally... Scotty. I'd love to see Ben and Jingles. Is it true they married? Bradley told me they had a few years back. (btw Brad, sorry if I hurted your feelings ; ) Saw Fish at the barter faire a few weeks ago. He's got kids and is a nurse now. Actually, that's the last place I saw Che, too. Anyone know what happened to him? I was sorry to see I missed his memorial.

Saw Moonflower at the B. Faire also. Am in touch with Jason (Jah-Sun, the travelling minstrel). Travelled with him north to see Joules a few months back. Seen Sierra and Adrian of course. Whatever happened to that guy Isaac? There's a Bandido that comes to the Buddhist temple I live at who used to hang out also, but I forget his name.

whatever happened to: Lisa, Aiden, Jem, T.J., Dylan, Al, Mishka, Lav, (not that I know everyone on this list.... Just curious) ummmm...

Hope everyone is well... Go placidly...

Ten years on... remembering Elf

I just flipped back through my journal and realized that it was ten years ago this month that Ken (a.k.a. Elf) died. I just wanted to take a moment to remember him. I have lots of memories of him, but just a few are: drinking wine with him late at night in the playground of Our Lady of the Lake Elementary in Wedgewood, doing art with him in my room (and the "Eve's Room" sign he made for my door, which sadly I don't think I still have), him coming Christmas carolling with me and my family and friends, him showing up at the airport by surprise the day I left for India, and, a sad memory, him in a hospital bed a year or two, I think, before he died. He and I had our ups and downs but in the end he was a really good friend to me and I will alway miss him.

Does anyone know what ever happened to his daughter? Or his mom?

Does anyone remember the exact date he died?

I just typed the last exit in my search bar on a whim and found you guys. Im not sure if you all remember me but I hung out at the exit well before Erv died until well after the last last exit up on university gave up the ghost. I remember Shmoo, Trippy, Blue, Jingles, Tyger, Alpha, John the freak, Toad (RIP, I loved you bro, best friends forever), the whole peaceworks crowd with Vivian and Cornflake, And a host of other people I cant recall their names but their faces are clear. Oh and you Sean, I still remember how you used to get so amped over Nirvana's cheerleader song that the veins would stand out on your neck lol. Ive thought many times of the unfortunate circumstances that brought the exit down namely the inept managment after Erv died and how the university took the place over. Could have and should have been an historic landmark.
How is Shmoo these days? Last I saw him he was still hanging out with Tyger. So whats the story on these people? Whats your stories? Me, in 98 I met my soulmate and we moved to southern Oregon, Ive since held many different jobs and have been a self employed custom motorcycle builder for the last five years. Having burnt out on the motorcycle business I started growing over seventy species of bamboo and sell it to landscapers and collectors as well as working for UPS in the evenings. I have a almost six year old son and we own five and a quarter acres in merlin Oregon. Things are great here. I often think of my past and the great times at the exit. It was a time in my life I will always remember even if all the names escape me, Im sure more will surface in time after talking with you all. Ill have to get a pic up some time but my camera seems to have walked away. Anyway say hi to Shmoo for me, Im sure he will remember who I am and if any of you old exit heads want to chat my email address is voodoolord@msn.com.

I saw Walter on the Upper Ave the other day. I was out biking; he was getting coffee at the Blue Dog for his construction crew. He says he's doing great, and I don't doubt it, he's looking better than ever. Since he's pretty much never online, I thought I'd pass this along. If anyone wants to get hold of him, message me. I have his phone number, but obviously shouldn't post it here.

Nervously excited actually. I'm Anna, Little Dave's sister. And some of you may remember the person I married for a time. I think back to the days and can't even believe - I grew up at the 'xit, literally. I was fourteen when I found my way there. Chills on my spine. It's nice to see some faces! I'm quite alive and well.......been through hell a few times, but who hasn't? My daughters (3, preteens) and I live in Southern California where I'm about to begin graduate school. It's been crazy......

His Holiness is an extraordinary Dzogchen Guru from the Nyingma Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. His Holiness is a Terton or Treasure Revealer possessing the knowledge and authority to transmit the secret essence of Vajrayana, hidden centuries ago by Padmasambhava. His Holiness possesses the enlightened wisdom of the past, present and future and is a powerful spiritual guide for sentient beings fortunate enough to meet Him. A highly realized Maha Siddha considered a Master among Masters.

His Holiness works tirelessly to teach and bestow empowerments on the great perfection lineage of Dzogchen Pema Nying-Thig to millions of lay Buddhist practitioners, ordained monks/nuns, and Vajrayana students throughout the world.

His Holiness will bestow many teachings and empowerments this time when He visits Seattle to help practitioners realize the true nature of their mind. This is a very auspicious opportunity to receive blessings directly from a highly realized Vajra Dharma Guru.

VAJRAKILAYA EMPOWERMENT - Friday, Aug 24th (6PM - 8PM)
The practice of Vajrakilaya blazes at the very heart of the ancient Vajrayana traditions of Tibet. The wrathful Heruka Vajrakilaya is a Deity who embodies the enlightened activities of all the Buddhas, manifesting in an intensly wrathful yet compassionate form in order to subjugate the delusion and negativity that can arise as obstacles to the practice of Dharma.

In fact, the practice of Vajrakilaya is famous in Tibetan Buddhism as an exceptionally powerful method to remove obstacles, destroy the forces hostile to compassion, and purify the spiritual pollution so prevalent in this age. Vajrakilaya practice is extremely powerful in removing outer, inner and secret obstacles on the Dharma path and is said to bring swift ordinary and extraordinary spiritual accomplishments. It can also avert misfortunes such as war, disease and famine. The practice of this deity makes it very easy to progress on the path, since all obstacles are naturally dispelled and one can achieve the supreme siddhi without any fault.

In summary, the practice of Vajrakilaya reigns supreme amongst Meditational Deities. Practitioners of Vajrayana should all receive this most excellent empowement.

AMITABHA EMPOWERMENT and PHOWA TRANSMISSION
Saturday, Aug 25th (10AM - 12PM)

Phowa is the profound path to Buddhahood without meditation, where the student learns how to transfer his or her consciousness directly to the pure land at the time of death without having to go through the experiences of the intermediate state or fall into any one of the six realms of samsara. This is a skillful method through which anyone with faith may swiftly be liberated.

Through this Empowerment, the seeds are planted in the studentsْ mind streams so they may practice conscious dying at the time of death, through their faith and devotion in the Lama and the practice of P'howa one may be able to bypass rebirth and go to the pure land of Amitabha, the Buddha of Limitless Light.

SHI-TRO EMPOWERMENT - Saturday, Aug 25th (2:30PM – 4:30PM)

This empowerment into the Mandala of the 42 Peaceful and 58 Wrathful
Enlightened Deities grant blessings beyond expression. It introduces us to the display of the peaceful and wrathful energies of the enlightened mind as they appear to beings in the intermediate state, or Bardo, between death and the next rebirth.

This empowerment will truly be a priceless opportunity to affirm our connection with the enlightened Deities, to purify damaged or impaired samaya and strengthen our spiritual connection. It is recommended for all students who wish to progress along the path of secret mantra and purify their defilements and negative karma of body, speech, and mind. The Shi-tro Empowerment is highly suggested for all who attend the Bardo teachings.

EXTENSIVE BARDO TEACHINGS - Sunday - Wednesday
Aug 26th - 29th (10 AM – 12 PM and 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM)

Join us for 4 days of extensive teachings on the Six Bardos, or intermediate states, including the Bardo of Birth, the Bardo of Dreaming, the Bardo of Meditation, the Bardo of Dying, the Bardo of Dharmata, and the Bardo of Becoming. Each of these six bardos presents us with opportunities for recognizing the true nature of our mind and being liberated from the duality of
self-clinging and subject-object grasping.

Receiving these teachings from a living master who has direct realization of this is a rare and priceless gift. Through these instructions, there is opportunity for finding enlightenment when encountering these bardos, rather than being overwhelmed by them or frightened by the appearances of the dying state and so forth. This is a precious opportunity to prepare ourselves for that moment of death we will all have to face, and to make a connection with a Vajra Dharma Master who can guide us along the path of liberation.

I do not know if any of you here have heard of SecondLife, but it seems like it might be an interesting place to create a Virtual Last Exit
Cafe... If you have a fairly decent PC/Mac and a DSL go get a free account and give it a look.. The learning curve is kinda steep so give it a chance....

Hi,

I’d like to invite you to a very special event I am putting on this coming Saturday, May 19. Renegade Soundwave is a Free Open Air New Moon at an amazing location - approximately 1.5 hours from Seattle and accessible by car. Carpooling is encouraged.

This gathering is free; leave no trace; alcohol free; rain or shine; dance your ass off.

The event starts at 6pm on Saturday and ends at noon on Sunday.

We will provide:

* a fire on the edge of the dance area
* drinking water
* chai
* fresh fruit
* chill space
* shelter over dance area in the event of rain. (Forecast as of today calls for a 30% change of light rain – not very likely)

We’re adopting the 10 Burning Man principles (http://www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/about_burningman/principles.html) for this event. Please come prepared to stay out and stay warm. Gifting is encouraged but not required – feel free to bring gifts to share with others.

Directions will not be publicly posted - please call 206-736-4754 the day of the event for detailed directions. I will also send a copy of the directions to every recipient of this e-mail by noon on Friday. Carpooling is encouraged.

If you'd like to volunteer or perform please shoot me an e-mail. Feel free to invite personal friends but please do not post (or repost) this event on any lists.

I trust that this event would attract positive and vibrant people - like you! More details below, flyer and pictures of location attached.

I can still remember:

Monday nights
Marble table tops
the wall paper
the smell of espresso, cigs, and mold
no photos
Irv - you've got to buy something
Italian sodas
Sundaes
Chess
Go
sitting there all day every day, and letting the world come by.

I was there most days from 83 - 92. It formed me, and I still mourn its passing.

Eddie Ray Walker

Found this link after googling Eddie. Few references to him, but this link
points to an art blog that has images of TWO of his paintings. One is a Bob Marley portrait that I saw Eddie working on in the New Exit back in '97, or '98. The blogger has listed it as "artist: unknown" The other is one in the blog is a image of one of his older murals(1972), and it is properly attributed. I left a comment for the blogger to correct the artist reference for the Marley portrait.

BTW: in Sept. 2003 I spoke with Eddie at some length, at Earl's on the Ave. He said he was making ready to travel to South America for an extended time. He wan't specific about his destination, but I'm sure he was heading for a tropical paradise. He gave me the impression that he might not be coming back. He and Bones were wanting me to help set up a Website for Eddie's paintings during that time, but it never got off the ground as far as I know.

I'm not going to make it myself, but Mark Chanen and Tracy Coskie asked me to let people know that they plan a Last Exit Reunion barbeque this weekend in Bellingham. The sent their phone number, but I don't think it would be appropriate for me to post that. You can get hold of me if you need it. Text of their message follows:

LAST EXIT REUNION
June 17, 2006

It's summer - take a ride up to Bellingham and join us for a backyard barbecue! Everyone's welcome. Bring a dish to pass or a drink to share. Let us know if you plan to spend the night.

Directions to Our Place
From I-5 heading North - go through Bellingham.
Take the Bakerview/Airport Exit # ??
Take a left at the light onto Airport Way
Continue straight on that road, past the airport, until it ends at Marine Dr.
Take a right on Marine Drive to Hoff Rd.
Turn right on Hoff Rd. We're at the end of the "block" on the left.
Beige house with green trim. [Take a left onto Bayon to find parking.]

You remember me, the original silver haired hippy.

Well, if you knew me you remember that I always claimed to be a beatnick. You might even remember my line abut the difference between a beatnick and a hippy.

But that's not the reason I asked you to look at this.

This is 2007, the 40 year anniversary of the Last Exit and the summer of love.

Anything planed for either that anyone has heard of in any form or media at all? Vague rumors accepted if labeled as such.

From the Wikipedia article on Yasser Seirawan: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yasser_Seirawan

"When he was seven, his family emigrated to Seattle (USA), where he attended McClure Middle School and Garfield High School, and honed his game at a (now-defunct) coffeehouse, The Last Exit on Brooklyn, playing against the likes of Latvian-born master Viktors Pupols and six-time Washington State Champion Jim McCormick."

There is also a short Wikipedia article on Viktors Pupols, but it doesn't mention the Exit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viktors_Pupols

I imagine most of you on this group were too young to particularly know these folks.

Anyone from FA services want to work a show this weekend Sept 16??

Yes, it's true. My phone rang tonight and it was DAMON GAYDEN!! He's been called out of retirement to put together a crew this weekend to work MXPX's show in Bremerton. The way-back machine, eh? Yes indeedy do. Imagine his challenge, to try and rouse all of us, 17 years later (!) to work a show.
If you are interested in working with or just catching up with Damon, call him at 360-966-2528 He's living with his wife on the property in Bellingham that his father owned.
He's not super online-savvy, so phone is best. I don't have an email for him.
Cheers!
Amani

Sunday Vale & Markku finally tied the knot after 16 years.

Congradulations! and about bloddy time!

It was a great wedding on the dock at her brother's lakeside home.

Many thanks to the father of the bride for paying for the whole thing. Also to Vale's sister Kristen and their father's girlfriend Susan for the wedding planning.

Ran into Peter Davenport

I ran into Peter Davenport on the Ave today. He says that he and some of the other "old guys" (Louis, Ray Paul, Darby, Moose) get together about 4pm Friday at Cafe Racer on Roosevelt, just south of Ravenna Blvd. He reports that Louis is doing fine, apparently fully recovered from his accident a few years back, living in Granite Falls but getting to Seattle roughly weekly because his girlfriend lives in Ballard.

Peter himself just bought -- I kid you not -- a former ICBM launch site in -- I kid you not -- Davenport, Washington (no relation), and is planning to move out there, taking the UFO Center with him. So he will literally be living in an underground bunker, the humor of which does not escape him.

He had the same old yellow hat, and that great air around him.
He said he spent some time in France, Italy, and Brazil.
I told him that some of us hangs out at the Wannabee.

It was *so* great to see him :)

June is raving about this new cafe that just opened at 52nd and Brooklyn in the U District. According to her (and Nancy and Bob) it has a very 'living room' sort of feel.

Worth checking out if you are in Seattle.

If it works perhaps we could attempt to put the band back together so to speak?
Off topic topic: Intellectual Poll (please read!)

The 'zit crowd has always been fairly intellectual soooo I'm hoping to get a
better result than the Orcas Island scene who are NOT :)

I'm taking a poll for a good cause, and to satisfy a niggling curiosity:

If you don't know the answer to one of these, don't speculate, and don't look it up
on the internet!!! Please, I want your recollection, not your freshly researched opinion!
This is not a contest. You are not being graded. It's only a poll....
And please don't reply to this posting here. Send a private message to my Tribe account.

If there is interest later I would love to have a discussion about his work with any and all ya'll. :)

"The Decline of the West" by Oswald Spengler -- 1919

How many of you here know:
1. Who this guy is...
2. What the work is about...
3. Why his work *was* important....

Why am I asking? Because something this guy wrote in 1919 turned **a lot**
of heads and then after WWII it seems to have been forgotten about almost entirely.
Yet today this man's ideas seem to be a fairly common understanding now,
even though no one I have talked to about it so far (except for the Russians
who told me about it), know anything about this guy.
When I tell someone about his hypothisis, everyone thinks they grok it.
Often adding "Geez doesn't everyone know that?!"

Thanks,

-Brian

I'll probably be around a bit more as I just moved back into the U-District from Bothell.

The Pearl and pianos

All of the disscussion of the Exit piano and Flagg's story about the commode and the third floor deck at 'the house' reminded me of something I had a part in.

After the piano at the house was destroyed Heidi decided she wanted the sound board from it. She recruited a bunch of people from the exit to help her load it on top of her car (further denting and scratching the Corolla of death) from the side yard of the house and then heft it up to her third floor apartment.

A few years later it mysteriously appeared painted and nailed to the wall of the Pearl as part of the decor.

I have no idea what happened to it after the Pearl closed.

(Ok so I suck at telling stories, tell me something I don't know)

Time to get back to the center of the known universe, North Seattle from the planet that’s called West Seattle.

I’m looking to move in April and thought I’d drop the tribe a few electrons. Wishing to live in Ballard, U district, Wallingford, Fremont, or Greenwood. Check out my listing in ‘Housing Wanted’ and thanks for the space and time.

Peace

Though I was VERY late on the ;xit scene I experienced it for only 6 months
before it closed, and it was the first coffee shop I found when I moved to seattle in July of 1993. (Thanx jessica (sweet jessica, that is)) I still see a lot of faces here that I remeber.

Hi there strangers. It was nice to see familiar faces on the screen when I saw this site. I am not really in contact with anyone though Sara seems to keep in touch for me. I am doing fine. I hope everyone in well, if not I can give you a physical assessment and straight cath ya' if needed. I am a NIT (nurse in training) at Seattle U. I have a little family, Cora, 4 and Milo, 2. I live in West Seattle with them and my husband Dale. I hope to talk to old friends soon. I miss sitting on the back deck, listening to music, and talking about nothing...some of my fondest memories I've shared with you, Lisa V.

hey, who's got cool artifacts from the Exit, what are they, and how did you get them?
I laid claim to (believe it or not) the piano when someone decided it would be better off sitting in the rain on the back porch of the new Exit. I asked Tom what he wanted to do with it and he replied "if you can move it out of there, you can have it for all I care"

In case any of you haven't noticed there is a Subway about to open in the Pearl's old space.

Now I don't know about you but somehow it seems really wrong to me for a soulless corprate chain store to be in the heroin hotel.

In my time on the Ave, that space has had a tobacco store/head shop, a bookstore, and the Pearl. According to some of the old-timers it has a rather interesting history stretching back at least as far as the early '60s.

Oh well, hope Subway likes the cockroaches.

I was active at the Last Exit in the 80's (82-84). I learned to play Shogi from a regular their. I always wanted to thank him for that, he was not a bad chess player either. I was in the Army then, stationed at Ft. Lewis. I would come up on the weekends and play eat and enjoy the area. I fondly remember the dented tea pots and food. Great place, I was planning a vacation up there this summer and was looking for the address of how to get there again.... when sadly I learned it was closed. Anyone know any places like this still open? Up in the SeaTac area?

Yay! When last we left our intrepid adventurers, they
were packing up and striking out for the wilds of
Spokane. It's been a long, cold (:cough:record
heat:cough:) winter, but they've pulled through. They
bought a house, learned the local language and even
had Adventures in Home Improvement.

Now that we're on the sunny side of the vernal
equinox, it's time to invite ya'll over and celebrate!
Old-timers know the drill, but here are the details:

What: Matt & Rey's Excuse for a Party (aka house
warming)

Date: Saturday, May 21st

Time: 6:32pm until...well, we're not 21 anymore, so
let's just say until midnight or when we start
brushing our teeth, whichever comes later ;)

Where: 4124 N. Post, Spokane, WA 99205

What to bring: Your own happy selves, scintillating
wit, sparkling conversation, an acoustic guitar if you
can play and have a repertoire larger than "Stairway
to Heaven"...Libations and snack-type offerings for
the altar o' comestibles are welcome, but not
required. Housewarming gifts are discouraged
(really!--we have enough *stuff*).

Kids are welcome until about 9:00.

If you're coming in from out of town and need
crash-space, please let us know. We'll do our best to
accomodate you. :)

Oh yeah, and RSVP's are appreciated (this email addy
or 509-328-0366).

Ciao!

Anyone interested in planning a get-together for late-May early-June time frame?

I'm thinking a BBQ/picnic would be cool. I'd probably have it at Gasworks as I live in the 'burbs these days.

Any ideas? Any suckers/volunteers want to help with this?

A pub crawl would be another idea and wouldn't require as much advance planning/notice.

Hey folks, it would seem that Donald Trump has trademarked the phrase "You're FIRED". When I heard this, the first thing that popped into my mind was the Last Exit's bathroom, where we all know, many people have been given thier "pink slips", even those who didn't have jobs.
I for one might not let this stand (in between running for political office, attempting to get a bi-line in before my dead-line and figuring out whether or not I actually want to get back to South America, I'm short on time for a cause like this), but I'm sure that maybe someone knows somebody that might want to look into the possibilty of opening an "Irv Cisky Memorial Poet's Fund" or some other such thing on Donald Trump's dime, might actually meet with some success.

Hey!

What's the dealio? Where you guys at? I've been missing the Exit like oxygen for nearly ten years now, then I find you here, and no one will talk to me. Is it 'cause you don't rememer me, or 'cause you do?
I remember the shit out of you, although your profiles, and mine, represent a bunch of years between our then and our now. So, hello there, this is Julie. Your bubbly, curly headed waitron and multi purpose hippy sister ala 1990/94.
C'mon, Liz, little sweeteart, you were just a baby thing back then, how are you honey? And Kai. Yeah, I remember you. Amy is a teen ager now? Unpossible. She was the youngest person ever 86'd by Irv, and you were beaming with pride about it.
Seriously, somebody, please. There are tumbleweeds blowing through this tribe. Shake it up! Order a mocha float and get some life pumpin' in this little corner. Fercrisakes. I am all the way in the wilds of NYC right now, and you know what I have with me? A tea pot, esspresso mug, and menu (complete with directions in Vivian McPeaks handwriting to get to a New Years party for 1990!) from the Last Exit on Brooklyn. Yeah.
Nut job? Sure. Hardcore? Damn Strait. Now you hippies better get off yer butts and answer back. Or I am gonna have to rethink my erstwhile mission of traveling the world and touting the grandure and unmatchability of the fantasticalisiousness of the far flug but still goin' strong denisons of the greatest fucking coffee house that ever (time is not linear, fear not)exsisted.
Don't make me let go of the hope, so recently gleened, that the vibrant, glowing, barking, spinning, sparkling, uber smart, oh-so-looney freakshow I remember feeding and caffinating and tending so tenderly, has somehow surrvived the scattering caused by our dear Irvs passing.
You are adored, you are heros. Step up. Answer back. Answer back...

Well well well!! Just when one thinks that time really is slipping into the future the past comes over and interjects a brazen Hey Now! My first visit to the Zit was with my next door neighbor, Mike in his 64 Impala, (Really his dad’s car until 1970) in the summer of 1968.

The district at that time was colorful, bright and a pleasure. Now? Well, all things come to an end. So I thought it was with the Zit, however, a friend told me of the tribe and the first two names I read on a post were friends from the "Vigil" compliments of the Way Back Machine!

Let’s keep on rollin’ and remember: If you hang out on the back deck to long Irv might come out and shoo you off. Let’s see where the electrons send us!

Peace and Light,

So this seems as appropriate a place as any to mention that I just saw the Firesign Theater at the Moore tonight. Ran into Viv there, and a few other ex-Exiteers, including Karma.

Good show. Surprisingly good, because I generally have thought their material really fell off after about 1975. However, with the new stuff, they are definitely back on top of their game.

They are now older than most of the older characters they used to pretend to be.

2 of them are apparently living around here: one on Fox Island, one on Whidbey.

thanks unruly

unruly, you reminded me of the senses surrounding the exit. thank you. I remember things too... like...

I remember things like how the marble tops of the outer tables were originally the stall doors to the men’s bathrooms in the first federal building or court house before they changed the location. And how they were not perfectly rectangular because they had to cut the hinges off. How the wall paper was ancient Victorian cloth that hung in tatters and was stained dark brown by decades of smoke. How there was an ace of spades on the painted black ceiling and I often pondered if it had anything to do with Nam. I remember how Irv liked smoke. He made the inner round tables 'smoking' and the outer ones were non but the only true place to escape the smoke was outside.

There would be days in the summer where the people of the exit would extend out beyond the proper borders of the café- out to the lawn across from the front past the large panes of beautiful glass, and around the side of the building on a skinny trail, bamboo and rhododendrons, to the open field behind where people would puff and let their dogs run. And out into the alley way in the back, all the way into 'Arnold's' across the alley with the cacophony of old school video games - the whole half of the city block was 'the 'xit'.

Between '91 and '93, The last Exit on Brooklyn was the second headquarters to ‘The Vigil’ a protest against the war... but also a protest against the baby boomers who told us to conform. We were Generation X’ers. We were Vietnam vets, college students, drop outs, drugies, crazies, run-aways, adoptee’s of the Last Exit, neatly tucked under the protective guide of Irv’s ruling. In 91, there was a massive winter storm, if I recall correctly... and a lot of us would be holed up in the exit seeking comfort. Winter days, large groups and small clusters of people would take the Burke Gillman trail between 'Peace Works' and 'The 'Xit'. 3 miles of a fast pace with trails of white breath falling behind.... “Have to get to the Exit, Can not wait for something hot- a nice warm bran loaf with the raspberry ‘sauce’ on the side...”. It would be freezing, a blizzard swallowed Seattle, and we would have to walk ASAP to get to a beat up old tin pot full of a peppermint chamomile tea - and scope out the beloved radiator to see if you could get a pice of prime real-estate. always two cups even if you were alone... because at any given table you sat at you would not be alone for long. That was the Beauty of the Exit, people sat together, strangers and familiars alike. Sometimes people ignored each other, but on many days there would be conversations on topics like science, free fuel, the environment, shamanism, world travel, the beat, street politics, drama, life in full vivid color, deep listening interrupted by bursts of warm laughter or heated debate and sometimes tears.

I remember being one of the only underlings (under 17) to not get kicked out by Irv. I was always in my journals, or books.... sometimes on the piano.... sometimes on a summer day I would cut school and smoke... and trip and come down the next morning as soon as the doors opened.... because Beth's was not an option, too loud, impersonal, cynical. Irv looked at me and could sense that maybe I really did not have a better place to be when I was spending my teen years at the Exit. I am glad he trusted me to be there, I learned so much.

I sadly recall that a tall clumsy man with a staff was proven to be the one responsible for the rape and murder of a 13 year old girl. they both hung out there but did not hang out together. They were both friendly acquaintances of mine. The man I tolerated, but kept my distance, he was kind of “funny”. The girl lied to me convincing me that she was a year older than me. I believed her and often went to her for advice, I knew she was not a virgin while I still was. She would listen. She would always give me a good hug. Later, I went to the trial. The funny man was sentenced to life without parole.

Then there were all the friends who over-dosed.... and some who waited to die a few years later holding out for the last of the people of the Exit to really exit. I remember all the people who loved each other so desperately that they destroyed each other. the intensity very much affected my adolescence. At the time I could not see how the people got to their destination of self destruction.

Now that I am older I am glad to have witnessed it because I survived some hardships in my life through knowing these fucked-up-beautiful people. They gave me the tools to hope for more, to know that it could be worse.... and I promised quite a few of the older ones that I would not make the same mistakes that they made. I still hold onto that.

I think I made it out of there lucky to not have wound up ... well... somewhere else that wasn’t about all the wonderful conversations I had there that made me dream that I could really be a great singer and songwriter and painter and traveler. I am glad I am not in the university district anymore but out here –somewhere- trying to make my own fantastic stories that I can bring back someday to a round table with tea and something affordable and delicious. Stories that I shall embellish and fill with magic... and share with all my love.

I got invited here by Jun.

I was at the Exit pretty regularly from late '87 until the end and then the Pearl until they closed.

I feel I should recognize more of the members here than I do.

Sadly I've managed to lose touch with pretty much everyone except Vale, Bob S, Eric J, and Jun. There are a few others I still have up to date contact info for but never seem to talk to unless I run into them around town.

Any and all who have ever known Danny are invited to come to his party.
I have been asked to share info with anyone who wants it.
PM me.
This will probably be the biggest old Exit gathering to happen again ever ever.
And it's not a funeral.

Cafe Trabante (sp?), which is apparently 2 doors left the Neptune "on the alley side" welcomed the old exit crowd for an afterparty after the even space closed, and as a regular coffee hangout. They will get an espresso machine within a month or something.

People also suggested meeting at the Cafe Allegro from 2-6pm on Sundays, upstairs. Maybe the chess crowd is already.

A fellow named Butterfly has a picture of Ogre with a poem in remembrance, you can reach him at 525-1336 for details.

mle e's posting indicates that it is on the 24th; I've received eMail indicating that is on the 31th. I can't summon up the courage to call Ginamarie and verify the correct date, but anyone planning to crash the event, or who wasn't going to go because of scheduling conflicts should verify the correct date.

Open Mic Nights

Does anyone remember the name of the woman who ran the open mic nights around '89-'90 timeframe? I used to play with my friend Stig on occasion and loved how she used to make it as quiet as a library, noone could make a peep.
Since I was underage and couldn't hang out in bars, the Last Exit was a great introduction to Seattle for me after moving out here from MA. I was introduced to some really great people, some who are still really good friends.
Whenever I was broke the PB&J's provided a decent meal to keep me going, they were sooooo good!

Clarence Ellis, where are ye...?

From earlier 70's through about 1979, I knew that my mom was a regular at the Exit. The place was fabulous. I must have gone there 500 times before I turned 13. There is *nothing* like since I have left. It truly felt like home. She returned in 1985 and before she died in 92 I think still went. Not sure. While I am looking for one person from the 70's who went there i would be interested in talking to anyone who knew Susan Bowen (mom), Clarence Ellis (her friend), Wanda Compton (her other friend), Terry Hallis (a friend, or subject of stories--cant remember)....

These people are artifacts of a time past and like Irv and his PBJs, the go boards, the chess pieces, the root beer floats, the thousand year old heater, the twangy piano, the cubby under the stairs, the grizzled wood, the best parking spot out back, the monstrous front door, they are loved and remembered.

Searching for Suzanne

Anyone remember Suzanne and know how to get in touch with her? Suzanne used to hang at the exit back in '91 or so. She lived in a little brown toyota truck and sometimes at a cabin out in Index. We lost track of each other many years ago and I would love to find her.
